Handmade vs Handcrafted Jewelry
I have been making jewelry for a while now. As it happens, I began labeling everything as "handmade". But then I saw the term "handcrafted" and wondered if that was more accurate.
A quick Google search says that the difference between handmade and handcrafted is simple. Handmade is “made by hand, not by machine, and typically therefore of superior quality.” Whereas handcrafted is defined as “Made skillfully by hand.” (Prestige, 2023)
While it is always a work in progress, and skills are improved over time, I like the term "handcrafted" more. Yes, the original materials are made by machines, but they are skillfully designed and assembled by hand, so therefore I believe that my pieces of jewelry are categorized as handcrafted.
Making something "skillfully" takes a lot of time and practice. These two terms are generally used interchangeably, but I feel as though "handcrafted" is more exciting. Crafting something feels like an art. Anyone can make something, but crafting it makes that item more exceptional.
